CCTV stands for closed-circuit television. It is one of the most popular ways to protect and safeguard buildings, acreage, installations and people and is often used in such a way that leaves it completely invisible to passersby. It is also the most affordable and flexible security system available for personal, business and government use.
A basic CCTV surveillance system consists of cameras, a recording device and a monitoring station. There are two basic types of these systems in use today: wired and wireless. In a wired system, the cameras are hardwired into the electrical grid within a building, and are connected to a monitoring station that also contains the recording device. This kind of system was primarily used in government buildings and private businesses, and was meant to do one thing: protect against theft.
In a wireless system, the most popular kind in use today, the cameras can be placed anywhere within signal range, and have eliminated the need for a centrally located monitoring station and recording device. The wireless cameras in this kind of system operate with their own individual power packs, record any image they capture on a chip that transmits directly to the user. Each camera can be outfitted with whatever extras the user of the system requires: motion sensors, infrared lenses or HD lenses and recording capability.
Today, these systems are used to protect against theft, vandalism, burglary, and have even been used to capture license plates of red light violators, and as access control to schools. The information recorded by these systems can be accessed via a private intranet system installed in each location, or even transmitted directly to the authorities, should the need arise. These are customizable systems, and are unobtrusive to use in public places and private homes.

The basic CCTV surveillance system today consists of a camera array, a router and some device to download the images to. That is it, unlike the systems used in the past. No longer are dedicated security teams needed unless a company wants one in place at all times. Huge areas devoted to recording equipment are also a thing of the past. The new systems are so easy to use and install that they are literally everywhere that needs protection, from banks to schools, to manufacturers to your family’s home.
Installation of a CCTV surveillance system is fairly easy to do. You have two ways of installing the cameras, hardwired into your electrical power, with fixed mounting hardware, or wireless, which is more flexible and not a drain on your electricity. Wireless cameras can be placed virtually anywhere, as long as they are within the signal range of the router. Some routers available today can also store the images the cameras capture, or can download the images directly to a home computer, laptop, or even a cell phone. Every installation package is able to be customized to your exact needs.
With hardwired systems, the cameras have to be attached to the electric grid to work, but wireless cameras power themselves through their battery packs. This makes them flexible enough to place anywhere, inside or out. The cameras themselves can be programmed to only film within certain parameters, so that they become energy efficient and do not waste energy with unnecessary recordings. You can also simply have all the camera images, no matter the camera type, downloaded directly to the computer without the router, or to any device that contains a wireless card. Most security companies will provide all software necessary to operate the system, including firewalls that will protect it from hackers.

The first important feature of any CCTV surveillance system is the ability to scan all around the area to be protected. This is done primarily through cameras mounted and joined together electronically into an array. Any camera array can have its images transmitted directly into a router or receiver, and then displayed on any kind of computer monitor or laptop. With this ability, all areas within and without a building can be monitored 24/7 to prevent burglaries, breaches, vandalism, theft, and any other danger to the building or the people that are supposed to be there.
Another important feature inherent in these systems is their reliability. Because the cameras can be set up to operate independently as well as within a hardwired system, even a power outage will not stop them from working. Moreover, most installed systems come with software that will protect all of it from being hacked or compromised in any fashion.
The last important feature that can be gained from installing these types of security systems is access control. With effective monitoring and security plans in place, using the closed-circuit system can prevent anyone from entering any area without permission, especially handy in government building and school areas. In times of emergency, the proper authorities can be notified immediately while access is shut down until they can arrive. This is only possible because of instantaneous, real-time monitoring provided by this kind of cutting-edge security system.
In today’s society, security can be of paramount importance and the drive is on to install newer versions or update an existing CCTV surveillance system pretty much anywhere people spend even the smallest part of their day. Whether it is at work, school or home, people everywhere have increased their own personal sense of safety and security by relying upon one of these systems.
